I took to Medium today to share some thoughts on the disappointing nature of the modern internet. This followed my wife’s attempt to join a discussion about a speech in a Facebook group for her professional colleagues and was harassed out of the group for her trouble.
It really got me thinking about how far we’ve fallen from our academic beginnings online and even the inspiring time of community and dialogue during the Web 2.0 age. Our scholarly resources now struggle to fight off vandalism. Our communication channels are overrun with sexbots. We’re not welcome to share any truly unique points of view with the remaining human users. What do we have left? A mob willing to destroy all opposition.
What a shame.
