The Balatro Story – New Podcast Episode ToddMitchell, August 26, 2024September 15, 2024 Let’s talk about my odd little connection to Balatro, the indie card game that set the world ablaze… One year ago, one of my weirdest career interactions took place. Spoiler: I did not work on Balatro Usually, we talk about development projects on the show. If they’re not mine, someone else stops by to talk about theirs. We also go over industry news when it’s worth talking about. Today’s a bit different. In this episode, I discuss my humble solo indie career. It left me with a rare career distinction. Namely, I’ve ported a Love2D game and released it on mobile app stores. This led a publisher called Playstack to approach me about another soloist’s game which turned out to be Balatro. The emotional roller coaster ride that followed didn’t work out in my favor. This happens all the time in the industry, but it’s worth talking about when people in the field don’t extend basic professional courtesy or human decency. There’s no silver bullet for some problems in game development, but poor interpersonal treatment is easily avoidable. Even for strictly business reasons, it made no sense for this publisher to ghost immediately after approaching me about a job. Developers like me make up the bread and butter of the entire indie publishing model. I also happen to have a decent content platform. Finally, publishers depend on being able to say they’ve made a commitment to “stand alongside developers as a trusted ally.” Onward and upward, though. I’m still actively developing other projects. It’s just a matter of time before I catch lightning in a bottle of my own. Guess who’s not going to publish it. More soon! Back to positivity in future episodes. I look forward to sharing more about what I’m working on. Several guests have also expressed interest in hanging out for an episode, and I doubt the news stories will stop any time soon.
